Unhelpful Advice

In the last few days I've heard/read/seen so many things which supposedly reduce your risk of getting Cancer. While cutting down on alcohol and not smoking are sensible suggestions, some are just getting ridiculous. Whilst using your mobile to make phone calls exposes you to harmful radio waves and electronic alarm clocks should be kept 3 feet from your bed due to their electromagnetic fields, there's no need to panic! Because luckily, Spanish scientists have found wearing red and blue fabrics outdoors protects you from UV rays better than white or yellow, drinking 5 cups of caffeinated coffee a day reduces your risk of cancer by 40% (woop for anyone else living on a diet of coffee, toast, and coursework deadlines), and  Uberfacts tweeted today that "Maple Syrup actually contains anti-oxidants and 54 beneficial compounds than can help you fight cancer." Is it just me or is this getting a tad unrealistic? I definitely agree that certain life style choices like regular exercise and a good diet are a way of keeping you healthy, but somehow I don't see myself buying a blue morph suit or living on coffee and maple syrup anytime soon. While it's great that so much research is being done, there's still so much that needs to be discovered. I'm not very scientific, so I don't think I'll be finding the cure anytime soon, but I think fundraising, and supporting charities such as Marie Curie is so important. Cancer is a disease which impacts nearly all of us in some way, whether you personally have been affected by it or have witnessed a relative/friends experience. Having seen two relatives battle with Breast cancer it's made me realise I want to do more. That's why I am really excited about Race for Life. It's an event I personally feel is really important, and I'm planning to sign up with some friends and my mum very soon! It's easy to get involved in, and as it's only 5k you don't need to worry about intense training. Look out for Coffee mornings, bake sales, any event supporting cancer research. & please let me know about any you find! We will find the cure - it's just going to take more than a lot of maple syrup and red coats...
