Knit & Natter

My Grandma is part of a 'Knit & Natter' club. At first, I thought nothing could be more dull, until I realised all it involved was sitting for hours, drinking tea, gossiping, and knitting! (Apparently she originally wanted to call it a 'Stitch & Bitch' class, but was told it was too cheeky!! - She lives in a very small village, these things matter....)

5 Reasons to love knitting:
1. You can do it anywhere/everywhere - on the tube, waiting for a friend, in bed!
2. No one seems to knit very speedily, so it is definitely acceptable to be working on the same 'scarf' for months and months..
3. People end up wearing ridiculous hats/gloves/jumpers with no shame because they're so proud they made them! The best ones are stripy/patchwork "patterns" which don't really fit and look like they've come from an exploding wool machine- no shame! I've ended up with around twenty stripy egg cosies due to a slight craze last winter - do eggs even need cosy-ing!?
4. After finishing a row, it is pretty much essential to have a slurp of tea and a biscuit. That's definitely a good enough reason to start learning.
5. It looks impressive, even if you're only doing the basic stitch. I've mastered 'knit one, purl one' (and I use the word 'mastered' very loosely), and doubt I will ever get any further, which is fine because it still looks complicated; people are impressed despite the fact I barely have a clue what I'm doing!

I'm now planning my own 'Knit & Natter' group: despite the fact we are all hopeless knitters, it's a good excuse to sit and have a gossip, we'll just leave the wool on the table as a prop! :-)
