This summer was amazing. Ama.Zing. Capital Zing. But between my beautiful trip to Barcelona, being in the musical, festivalling away, and some lovely days & evenings with my friends, I really really neglected some important things. I was so busy celebrating results that I forgot to actually do anything productive with them! So I've spent today speed typing a history essay (I feel sorry for whoever has to read it, not my best work by far...), and frantically googling university open days & courses! It's been really horrible, and I realise now I could've easily started thinking about this months ago, but I've started to make some head way now. But I got myself into such a state about it a few days ago that I realised I needed to calm down, so I've had a huge clear out! I'm currently on my 3rd bin bag, and I'm feeling so much better already. I've cleared out some clothes that I haven't worn in years (which I'm potentially ebaying, but having never done it before, I'm a little trepidacious!), loads of magazines I've been collecting since I was about 14, as well as random things I kept from middle school like pencil cases full of old notes passed in lessons...
Although it's far from clutter free, my bedroom is starting to feel a lot calmer! I've put my favourite Cath Kidston sheets on the bed, my make up is all arranged conveniently on my chest of drawers, and I've replaced my wall of photos with a world map to remind me there's so much out there for me to see. (Also I am possibly the most un-geographically-capable person ever, so when it comes to planning my gap year, this will definitely come in handy!) If you need a similar refresher, then these are some tips to help!
My Tips
1. When it comes to clothes, if you haven't worn it in the last 6 months (without a good reason - if it's a winter coat then fair play), and don't see an occasion in the near future (i.e. a month) where it'll be needed, it's going! I never chuck out clothes - try to send as much of it as you can to charity shops. Or venture onto ebay - I'll let you know how I get on with my attempt!
2. I am a really sentimental person, so there's some things I know I can't part with. If you're the same, grab a box or draw and store anything really special in there. You won't look at it very often, but knowing it's there is what's important.
3. De-Clutter visually. My walls have been covered in gig tickets/photos/train tickets/magazine cuttings for years, and it built up so much that you could barely see the actual colour of the walls. The photos are now in a tin, the tickets are arranged onto one wall, and everything else is surprisingly bear compared to how it is! Someone pointed out to me that before there were eyes everywhere staring at me - I'd never really thought of it, but now I can see what they mean, it's nice to feel unwatched for a while!
4. Don't. Chuck. Books. Although I am a really slow reader, I love the process of choosing/reading/finishing a book, and I've got lots I was given or have collected. Keep them. I love lending them to friends, and on day you'll want to reread your faves. I just pile them up and they don't take up a lot of room at all.
5. Bed. I LOVE my bed. It's perfect for me - I have an electric blanket, three pillows, fairy lights, and lots of cushions. It's the one place I feel really safe & snug, and everyone needs that! Make yours exactly as you want it, whether it's a plain duvet or a crazy one (mine is Cath Kidston Kids Cowboy print), and keep it as your place to relax.
