The Lost Art Of Writing Letters

One of my favourite books is called Love Letters Of Great Men. Although it annoys me that there's no women in there (I guess as a book aimed at soppy women it probably wouldn't have sold so well...), I can appreciate that for manly men to have written such good stuff is probably worth collecting, binding & publishing! While Beethoven & Napoleon's are pretty intense - "Ever Thine, Ever Mine, Ever Ours" (eternally ruined for me by Sex And The City) and "My beloved Josephine stands alone in my heart, occupies my mind, fills my thoughts" - I prefer the ones from soldiers to their beloveds left at home. There's something more touching about Lieutenant Rapopart's "I realize how lucky I am in having you for my own darling wife-to-be." I think, especially when you find out he never returned home to his fiance. Anyway, I recently realised there are some really important people in my life that I barely keep in touch with. I decided being "friends" on facebook or "following" them on twitter doesn't cut it anymore, I wanted something more personal so I sat down and wrote a few letters. Nothing groundbreaking or book worthy, and I slightly forgot I was waiting for a response, but when I came home the last two days I had a lovely surprise!  Today there was  a bright yellow envelope and a sheet of typed tales, and yesterday a cream envelope with american stamps, and a hilarious card inside. I've just finished my replies to post tomorrow, and am already looking forward to hearing from them again! It's just a lovely thought that someone has taken the time and effort to sit down and formulate their thoughts to put onto paper for you. So although a nice tweet or facebook message is always nice to receive, wait until you start sending letters - having something physical to show someone cares is the best thing. :-) Send one now! Short, sweet & to the point is the best to start with!X
