Calendar Girls
Tonight I snuggled down and watched one of my favourite films - Calendar Girls. Not only is it hilarious, it's so moving, and the bit I love most is that it's a true story. For anyone who hasn't seen it, 11 members of Knapley village's W.I. get together and pose nude for a calendar in order to raise money for the relatives room at their local customer, after one of the women's husband, dies of leukemia. Initially intending to raise enough for a sofa, the women caught the attention of the press and, (in reality) to date have raised over £3 million for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. Angela, the husband of John Baker who died in 1998, said that John 'said that we would never do it, that we were all talk', but the original calendar inspired a hugely successful film, as well as a stage show that tours England! I love this story; the fact that these women were brave enough to get up and do something so bold in memory of their friend & loved one is so inspiring. So have a watch of the film, (Julie Walters & Helen Mirren are amazing as ever), but also have a look at this youtube clip, because it is so heartwarming to see these lovely women be so strong!
