Here's a few things that can help you get that job; they may be small, but it's the little things that matter!
- Ask friends - I've been really lucky as nearly all the part time jobs I've had have been through friends. It's a great way to get into a position, as you'll know when companies are hiring possibly before they're even advertising. Also your friends will be able to be honest in recommending you for a job, and (most of the time) that's definitely an advantage!
- Be friendly! - When you're handing in CV's make sure you smile and come across as a positive, confident person. A friend of mine recently said a cafe turned away three applicants for a job because they wouldn't make eye contact when giving in CV's, and just generally came across as a bit cold and shy. Even if you're nervous, remember the worst that can happen is that you don't hear anything back, in which case you haven't lost out.
- Be organised - Make sure you know the kind of hours you can work before you apply for a job. Ask about shift schedules, possibility of extra hours in holidays, and make sure your CV's aren't crumpled at the bottom of your bag. I always take mine in a folder to make sure they don't get creased - a little extra detail makes a difference!
- Dress well.... - If you're just dropping in a CV, you'll probably only talk to someone for a minute or so, so you need to make a strong positive impression. Don't wear scruffy trainers and a hoodie. Obviously don't go in business wear, but just wear something sensible. If you're applying to shops, try and wear a piece of clothing from their shop. Definitely show you have your own personal style - most places like to see a bit of personality.
- Fingers crossed! I always think this helps, but don't put all your hopes into one application. Make a few, send out a load of CV's, and try and keep your options open. :-)
